the green beautiful

a strange and funny film about an alien from a utopian planet’s visit to earth and her perspective on the way we live our lives…

it is starling season and the fields surrounding the farm are full of them. murmurations of them swoop around just before sunset and you can hear an almighty whooshing noise as they all leave the trees in perfect synchronicity. it reminds me of watching them at the end of the pier in brighton and it feels like home.

fairy tales

“just living is not enough,” said the butterfly, “one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.”

house and home

i spent HOURS poring over this incredible book and i’m becoming increasingly interested in building my own, beautiful tiny home… the author of the book has a blog full of wonderful pictures of handbuilt houses and other things here.

great news

yes! this is coming out next year and it looks great!

“this is what you shall do; love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants… have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”

using it

these maps have turned my life around. they are the best city maps ever and when using it it is possible to feel a bit less like a tourist and a bit more at home. we have used them in vienna and prague and every suggestion on them has been wonderful. they are non-profit and run by locals and if you want one for your city you can apply to start one which is great (there are none in england yet…). you can see what cities they have on their website and i am going to plan future city breaks on whether they have these maps or not!
